Media Center
Welcome to the Smith Elementary Media Center page. This information is meant to be a quick overview of the media center experience and guidelines for checkouts.
Each week, your child has Media for 50 minutes, on the same day each week. It is the goal of the Media Center program to help all students become critical thinkers, problem solvers, digital citizens, and to have a love for books that will last a lifetime! Throughout the curriculum, students practice library and research skills, learn how to be a digital citizen, read and discuss diverse books, and learn coding basics. Part of the media program is checking out library books, which is explained below.
“Let children read whatever they want and then talk about it with them.” – Judy Blume
Library Checkout Procedures
- Students have the opportunity to check out library books every week during their media special.
- Students return the books on their next media day. If a student wishes to keep a book longer, they can renew it during media time.
- K/Y5 checks out out 1 book per week.
- 1st-5th checks out up to two books per week.
- When a student forgets a book, they will complete a simple reminder “Oops” note to help them remember to bring it back.
- If the books is still not returned by the next Media day, another note will be sent home with the child listing the titles and the amount the book costs. Fines are only assessed when it is determined a book cannot be found or is damaged. There are no fines for late books! If a fine is assessed and then the book is returned to the library, there will be a refund issued to you.
- Students can always return books and check out new books at Open Library times.

You may want to browse this site with your student prior to their library class to help them find a book that may be perfect for them!
